Alzheimer Society of Washington

Why fundraising is vital to our organization’s success.

Why is fundraising so important to us?

Fundraising, in addition to other donations and grants, are key in helping our non-profit organization to survive and thrive. It is especially important to a homegrown, grassroots organization like ours, who can’t draw from other chapters or a national headquarters for support.

Here are some shocking statistics about dementia in Washington State:

  • 1 out of 3 Washington State seniors has Dementia (Nationally that number is 1 out of 10)
  • Washington State has the 9th highest dementia death rate in the country.
  • Whatcom and Skagit counties have some of the highest dementia rates in the State.
  • Washington State caregivers provide 3.96 million hours of unpaid care

People living with dementia and their care partners, are stressed, often feel isolated and many of them suffer from depression. Our groups and programs are designed to help pull people out of that isolation, give them purpose and help them reduce their stress. We make a conscious decision to offer our programs at little to no cost for a reason: the long term care of someone with a chronic, terminal illness is expensive.  It would violate our mission by adding to caregiver stress or denying help, support and education to those who can’t afford.

Every single dime we raise, goes back into Dementia Support Northwest to help keep it operating.

Here are what your donation dollars go toward funding:

  • 16 monthly peer groups for people with early stage dementia
  • 9 monthly educational based peer support groups for caregivers
  • Memory screenings
  • Project Lifesaver Program
  • E.A.D. Talks
  • Countless hours of crisis call management

Our organization only has three employees, again, in an effort to keep overhead costs at a minimum, so we accomplish most of what we do with the help of unpaid volunteers.

As the Baby Boomer population continues to age, the number of people with dementia in Whatcom and Skagit counties is continuing to grow. Our services are more important than ever. We need your help to ensure we can continue to meet our mission.
